SERIES REVIEW: Ruthless People Series (Ruthless People #1-3) by J.J. McAvoy

To the outside world, they look like American Royalty, giving to charities, feeding the homeless, rebuilding the city. But behind closed doors is a constant battle for dominance between two Bosses, cultures, and hearts.

Ruthless People is a romantic crime fiction set in modern day Chicago, following the life and marriage of Melody Nicci Giovanni and Liam Callahan—rivals by blood and leaders through fear. Their marriage was arranged by their fathers in hopes to end years of bloodshed between the Irish and the Italians.

Liam, next in line to lead the Irish, believes he’s getting a simple-minded wife, one he can control, one who bends to his every need . . . the complete opposite of Melody. Bred to be a Boss, a world-class marksman, master of disguise, with no mercy and no fear. Twenty-four years later, she has achieved more than any man could even dream of, killing anyone who steps in her way. She knows exactly what type of man Liam is, and she would rather die than give up the power she has spent her whole life building. But with no other family left, she must not only learn to work with Liam, but the whole Callahan clan.

The Mafia of the past is evolving, and with rival bosses gunning for them, Melody and Liam will have to figure out how to work as one to take down those who stand in their way, all while keeping up appearances.

Power, Family, and Respect are everything.

Love a great mafia story. Love Romeo and Juliette. But I was on the fence about this one. Damn, I'm am SO GLAD I jumped right into this!!

I could not put this down.

Every single ounce of spare time was consumed with Liam Alec Callahan, the head of the Irish mob and Melody Nicci Giovanni, Boss of the Italian mafia.

Liam is cocky, gorgeous, ruthless, power hungry, controlling and devious - yes, of course, I was a goner for him! And Mel is stunning, sexy, lethal, bloodthirsty and savage. She was FANTASTIC. When these two weren't trying to kill each other, they were ripping each other's clothes off.

This is a crazy-ass ride that was so well written. I could have highlighted the whole damn book because the dialogue was spectacularly witty, sharp and hilarious.

There were times that it was over-the-top insane but the scary part is that there are people like this out there!!

This story has everything that a good mob story should with violence, mayhem, torture, betrayal, lies and I could go on.

"Do you not feel like we are Pandora just as she is about to open her box? They will bring chaos like we never could, and we did it simply with the hope of bettering them for the future."

I absolutely loved this wild ride and Ms. McAvoy of course left us hanging...awaiting more savagery and chaos from Mel and Liam. Bring it!

This was a BR with the Canaries, had so much fun! xo

One Secret. Multiple Casualties.

Everything Melody Callahan has ever been told about her past is a lie. Her father lied. Her husband lied. But like all secrets…they come out. Not only is her mother, Aviela, alive but she won’t stop until she tears down everything Liam and Melody have spent the past year building.

With a new target on their back and the media now focused on their family as the Presidential election approaches, Liam and Melody must fight on two battlefronts. Melody is torn between being in love with Liam and wanting to kill him for lying to her. Being in love and showing love are two different things in her world. Liam wants to do anything to protect his family even if that means hurting the people he loves.

Family is everything… but what happens when they’re out for your blood? Everything they have been through is nothing compared to what is coming...

Well, I liked going back to the crazy mayhem of the Callahans but I did have a hard time remembering some of what happened in book 1 and who was who. There's a lot of these fantastic yet psychotic characters, each with their own issues, angles and agendas...

There were multiple POVs and side stories going on and while entertaining, I found it distracted from Liam and Melody (yes, I'm in it for the homicidal duo) and at times, I really didn't care.

I LOVED the first book; it was among my favourites for the year. Book 2 was good but it wasn't as riveting. It took me a lot longer than usual to read this and part of it was RL getting in the way but also, I was a bit blasé at times with what was going on.

Needless to say, there was lots of this...

And this

And truth be told, A LOT of this...

I realize that this was a natural progression for this story. It ended with a brilliant cliffhanger that didn't leave me angry (because I'd have to wait) but anxious for the final book. In my opinion, this book was the bridge in the story to get from the beginning to the end and so there were lulls but the last part of the book promised so much!!

BR with the Canaries!

“Villains by Choice."

Betrayed. Melody is nowhere to be found, Liam is in jail, and the Callahan family is cracking, just as Avian Doers, the FBI Director and puppet master behind their downfall, planned.

But just because they’re down doesn't mean they’re out. To fight back, Liam and Melody will have to put everything on the line. The kid gloves are coming off, and no one is getting out alive. Nothing will compare to the reign of terror that is about to envelope the entire country. First they were Ruthless, now they are pure Savages. The end is here, and no one is safe…

18+ Adults Only for violence and sex.

What a Grand Finale for the Callahan empire – this was a truly brilliant series!!

Ms. McAvoy, take a bow…

This one was a real roller coaster of emotions for me much like I found the first book to be. I had tremendous highs

and devastating lows.

It begins right where the second one ended with Liam trapped and Melody in the wind...

“Let’s get this clusterfuck on the road,”

And the story that unfolds is madness, mayhem, murder and martial bliss. Melody and Liam at their finest.

I LOVED this ruthless couple before but in this one, having them grow as individuals and as a couple was just...

and also a lethal weapon...

“You kill for family. You die for family because you can’t trust anyone else.”

LIAM ALEC CALLAHAN is all man...

and your worst nightmare...

“We are Callahans, if anyone ever disrespects us, don’t just end them, end everything they have ever cared about both past and present. Make them the example as to what happens when you fuck with the wrong family.”

And together, they are as HOT as ever...

“That really is the secret to making it; having someone at your side willing to fight for you, die for you, kill for you…”

I really enjoyed the whole cast of characters, even the ones I loved to hate. But I will say that Declan and Coraline snuck up on me in this one and I just adore them. JJ obviously knew what she was doing because I am over the moon that there's a novella about these two: Declan + Coraline

If you want something truly original, fantastically memorable MCs and you don't shy away from the reality of greed, malice and tyranny, YOU. MUST. READ. THIS. SERIES!
